The images from Los Angeles are disturbing. President Trump has dispatched the National Guard to keep order in LA where protestors are confronting ICE agents with rocks and fireworks. They’re even setting cars on fire:
At first glance, you might see the rooftop units and think these are police cars. But the truth is: those rooftop units are LiDAR arrays. These cars are – or were – part of Waymo’s fleet of Robo-Taxis that have been racking up fares in Los Angeles since November 2024…
Owned by Google, Waymo currently operates around 100 Robo-Taxis in L.A. – a drop in the bucket compared to “regular” Uber drivers, who number in the tens of thousands. Still, Waymo Robo-Taxis have taken a 2% share of the LA rideshare market, an impressive achievement from such a small fleet.
Still, that 2% market share doesn’t reflect the incredible popularity that Waymo Robo-Taxis are seeing in San Francisco and Austin, Texas. In 20 months, Waymo has grown its market share in San Francisco to 27% – Waymo is now bigger than Lyft in San Fran!
The numbers from Texas are even more stunning. Waymo Robo-Taxis started service in Austin in March 2025 with a small 100-car fleet. Within a month, Waymo had captured a 20% share of all rides hailed on the Uber platform.
To put that in perspective, at any given time, there may be 2,000 human Uber drivers on the road in Austin. In 2024, they provided 130,000 rides. Still, with just 100 cars on the road, Waymo is currently providing one out of every five rides…
The conclusion is pretty simple: customers prefer Robo-Taxis. No driver annoying you with their life story and expecting a 20% tip…and the NHTSA says Waymo is 92% safer than human drivers.
With Waymo rolling out service in Miami now and then in Atlanta in the next few months, the Robo-Taxi revolution is coming fast…
